Female Body Fat Percentage Estimation Chart Round hip measurement down to nearest ½ inch and record (for example, round 44¼ inches to 44 inches). Apply sufficient tension on the tape to minimize effect of clothing. Make sure the tape is level and parallel to ground. Place the tape around the hips so that it passes over the greatest protrusion of the buttocks (gluteus muscles) as viewed from the side. When measuring, the person doing the measuring should be facing the right side of the person being measured. The shorts cannot be form-shaping like control-top pantyhose, spandex tights, and other "shaping" garments that may provide an untrue measurement. The hip measurement is to be taken over shorts only. And as with the neck, ensure the person being measured is standing up straight and the tape is horizontal! Round abdominal measurement down to nearest ½ inch and record (For example, round 27¾ inches to 27½ inches). Take measurements at the end of a normal, relaxed exhalation. The natural waist measurements will be taken on bare skin, at point of minimal abdominal circumference, usually located about halfway between the navel and the lower end of the breastbone (sternum) with the arms down to the sides. Round neck measurement up to the nearest ½ inch and record (for example, round 13¼ inches to 13½ inches). Stand up straight! Ensure the measuring tape is as close to horizontal as anatomically feasible (the tape line in the front of the neck should be at the same height as the tape line in the back of the neck). The person being measured must be looking straight ahead with shoulders down and relaxed. Do not place the tape measure over the larynx. The neck measurement will be taken on bare skin, at the point just below the larynx and perpendicular to the long axis of the neck. Recruiters are strictly prohibited from taking measurements from those of the opposite sex. The only measurement that counts for enlistment is the one that is completed during your visits to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). The measurement completed by the recruiter IS NOT an official measurement. For females, a circumference value is obtained by measuring the neck, natural waist and hips, and then subtracting the neck measurement (in inches) from the natural waist PLUS hips measurement (in inches). In order to obtain the estimated body fat percentage for females that exceed the Navy's maximum weight, measurements must be taken at the neck, natural waist and the hips to determine if they can otherwise qualify via the body fat percentage standard.
